Day 7: Psalm 133

How good and pleasant it is
when God’s people live together in unity!

2 It is like precious oil poured on the head,
    running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
3 It is as if the dew of Hermon
    were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,
    even life forevermore.

Growing up in northeastern Kentucky we had some hot summer days. On the hottest of those days— especially right after I got done mowing the grass or playing a game of baseball—there was nothing as refreshing as my mom’s ice cold sweet tea. I joke with my wife sometimes that the reason I haven’t ever had a cavity is because my teeth built up an immunity to sugar—I had sweet tea in my bottle!

However refreshing that sweet tea was, it doesn’t compare to how good and pleasant it is when there is unity in the body of Christ. Here we see that unity among believers is sweeter than the oil with which Aaron was anointed for the priesthood (see Exodus 30).

Dew on the grass is often a sign of life being renewed, refreshed. As we finish this first week of Pentecost, let us invite the Holy Spirit to fall fresh on us, like dew on the morning grass, and to remind us of the pleasantness and refreshing nature of unity among those of us who follow Jesus.
