Day 18: Proverbs 9:1-6

Wisdom has built her house;
    she has set up its seven pillars.
2 She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine;
    she has also set her table.
3 She has sent out her servants, and she calls
    from the highest point of the city,
4     “Let all who are simple come to my house!”
To those who have no sense she says,
5     “Come, eat my food
    and drink the wine I have mixed.
6 Leave your simple ways and you will live;
    walk in the way of insight.”

The proverb writer speaks of wisdom as a woman who has built her house, set her table, and invites others to come and seek wisdom, leaving the foolish ways behind. What a great image of how we should live! We, as believers should build our homes on wisdom, set our tables with wisdom, and invite others to seek wisdom.

In verse one, the writer tells us that wisdom is built. It’s not something we are born with, and we can’t buy it or inherit it–it’s built. One decision at a time, one choice at a time, over time. We can choose to be wise simply by the choices we make in our daily lives.

Wisdom starts with humility. Recognizing that you don’t have it all figured out and that you need God’s insight are the first steps to wisdom (verse 6). Begin by asking God for wisdom and guidance in situations you face. Seek Him in your daily decisions, however big or small. There is peace in wisdom; let His peace direct your decisions, and wisdom will follow.
